What the Bible Says About the Spirit of God

The Holy Spirit is mentioned throughout the Bible—from the creation account in Genesis to the final invitation in Revelation.

He is not a minor subject in Scripture. The Bible describes the Holy Spirit as the Spirit of God, the Spirit of the LORD, the Holy Spirit, the Spirit of Christ, the Spirit of truth, and the Comforter.

So, who is the Holy Spirit? What does He do? And what does the Bible teach us about Him?

Let us allow Scripture to speak for itself.

1. The Holy Spirit Was Present at Creation

From the very beginning, the Spirit of God is present.

“And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.”
— Genesis 1:2

The Holy Spirit was not something that suddenly appeared in the New Testament. God's Spirit is present from the beginning of creation.

Job also says:

“The Spirit of God hath made me, and the breath of the Almighty hath given me life.”
— Job 33:4

2. The Holy Spirit Came Upon God's Servants

Throughout the Old Testament, God's Spirit empowered people to accomplish His purposes.

The Spirit came upon judges such as Gideon and Samson.

“But the Spirit of the LORD came upon Gideon…”
— Judges 6:34

“And the Spirit of the LORD came mightily upon him…”
— Judges 14:6

The Spirit also empowered craftsmen and leaders.

“And I have filled him with the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge…”
— Exodus 31:3

God's Spirit gave wisdom, strength, leadership, prophecy, and ability.

3. David Knew the Holy Spirit

After David's sin, he pleaded with God:

“Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.”
— Psalm 51:11

David understood that God's Spirit was essential to his relationship with God.

This is a powerful reminder that we should never treat the presence of God's Spirit lightly.

4. God Promised to Pour Out His Spirit

The Old Testament prophets looked forward to a time when God's Spirit would be poured out upon His people.

The prophet Joel declared:

“And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit upon all flesh…”
— Joel 2:28

This promise becomes extremely important in the New Testament.

On the Day of Pentecost, Peter explained that what was happening was connected to Joel's prophecy.

5. The Holy Spirit Was Upon Jesus

When Jesus was baptized, the Holy Spirit descended upon Him.

“And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him…”
— Luke 3:22

Matthew records:

“And lo a voice from heaven, saying, This is my beloved Son, in whom I am well pleased.”
— Matthew 3:17

Here we see something remarkable: the Father speaks from heaven, the Son is being baptized, and the Holy Spirit descends upon Jesus.

Jesus then begins His public ministry in the power of the Spirit.

“And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness.”
— Luke 4:1

6. Jesus Promised the Holy Spirit

Before His crucifixion, Jesus promised His disciples that they would not be left alone.

He said:

“And I will pray the Father, and he shall give you another Comforter, that he may abide with you for ever.”
— John 14:16

Jesus identified this Comforter as the Spirit of truth:

“Even the Spirit of truth…”
— John 14:17

And Jesus continued:

“But the Comforter, which is the Holy Ghost, whom the Father will send in my name, he shall teach you all things…”
— John 14:26

The Holy Spirit teaches, reminds, guides, and testifies about Christ.

7. The Holy Spirit Guides Us Into Truth

Jesus said:

“Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth…”
— John 16:13

And then Jesus explained:

“He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you.”
— John 16:14

Notice the purpose of the Holy Spirit:

He glorifies Jesus.

The work of the Holy Spirit does not contradict Christ. The Spirit points people toward the truth about Christ.

8. Pentecost: The Holy Spirit Comes Upon the Believers

In Acts 2, Jesus' promise was dramatically fulfilled.

“And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
— Acts 2:4

Peter then connected this event with the prophecy of Joel.

“And it shall come to pass in the last days, saith God, I will pour out of my Spirit upon all flesh…”
— Acts 2:17

The coming of the Holy Spirit empowered the disciples to become witnesses of Jesus Christ.

Jesus had already told them:

“But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me…”
— Acts 1:8

9. The Holy Spirit Dwells Within Believers

Paul gives a very powerful teaching:

“Know ye not that ye are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwelleth in you?”
— 1 Corinthians 3:16

He says again:

“What? know ye not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you…”
— 1 Corinthians 6:19

This means that the Christian life is not simply about following external religious rules.

God's Spirit works within His people.

10. The Holy Spirit Gives Spiritual Gifts

The Holy Spirit gives different gifts to believers.

Paul writes:

“But all these worketh that one and the selfsame Spirit, dividing to every man severally as he will.”
— 1 Corinthians 12:11

The gifts include wisdom, knowledge, faith, healing, miracles, prophecy, discernment, tongues, and interpretation of tongues.

But these gifts are not given for personal pride.

They are given for the building up of the body of Christ.

11. The Holy Spirit Produces Fruit in Our Lives

One of the clearest signs of the Spirit's work is not simply supernatural gifts—it is transformed character.

Paul writes:

“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith.”
— Galatians 5:22

He continues:

“Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
— Galatians 5:23

A person who walks according to the Spirit should increasingly demonstrate:

Love.
Joy.
Peace.
Patience.
Kindness.
Goodness.
Faithfulness.
Gentleness.
Self-control.

The Spirit changes not only what we believe, but also how we live.

12. We Are Called to Walk in the Spirit

Paul says:

“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
— Galatians 5:16

And:

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25

Being led by the Holy Spirit should affect our decisions, relationships, words, attitudes, and daily lives.

13. The Holy Spirit Can Be Grieved

The Bible also gives us a serious warning:

“And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.”
— Ephesians 4:30

This language is significant.

Scripture does not describe the Holy Spirit as merely an impersonal force.

The Spirit teaches.

The Spirit speaks.

The Spirit guides.

The Spirit testifies.

And Scripture says the Spirit can be grieved.

Therefore, Christians are called to live in a way that honors God's Spirit.

14. Do Not Quench the Spirit

Paul gives another warning:

“Quench not the Spirit.”
— 1 Thessalonians 5:19

We should not deliberately resist God's work in our lives.

Instead, we should listen, obey, pray, study God's Word, and allow the Spirit to produce His fruit in us.

15. The Holy Spirit Helps Us Pray

There are moments when we do not even know what to pray.

Paul writes:

“Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought…”
— Romans 8:26

And:

“But the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.”
— Romans 8:26

What a beautiful promise.

When we are weak, confused, broken, or unable to find the right words, God has not abandoned us.

The Spirit helps us.

16. The Holy Spirit Bears Witness

Paul writes:

“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God.”
— Romans 8:16

The Holy Spirit assures believers of their relationship with God.

And John writes:

“And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given us.”
— 1 John 3:24

17. The Holy Spirit Is Associated With God

One of the most striking passages is the story of Ananias and Sapphira.

Peter says to Ananias:

“Why hath Satan filled thine heart to lie to the Holy Ghost…”
— Acts 5:3

Then Peter explains:

“Thou hast not lied unto men, but unto God.”
— Acts 5:4

This passage is significant because lying to the Holy Spirit is described as lying to God.

18. The Holy Spirit and the Father and the Son

Jesus gave His disciples this command:

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost.”
— Matthew 28:19

The Father.

The Son.

The Holy Spirit.

This verse is foundational to Christian teaching about the relationship of the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Paul also concludes his second letter to the Corinthians with:

“The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Ghost, be with you all.”
— 2 Corinthians 13:14

19. The Holy Spirit Inspired the Prophets and Scriptures

Peter explains where prophetic Scripture came from:

“For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost.”
— 2 Peter 1:21

This teaches that the Holy Spirit was active in God's revelation through the prophets.

20. The Holy Spirit in the Final Book of the Bible

• Empowers God's servants
• Gives wisdom and understanding
• Speaks through God's prophets
• Was upon Jesus
• Was promised by Jesus
• Teaches believers
• Guides believers into truth
• Testifies about Jesus
• Glorifies Christ
• Gives spiritual gifts
• Produces spiritual fruit
• Dwells within believers
• Helps believers pray
• Intercedes for believers
• Bears witness that we are God's children
• Seals believers
• Can be grieved
• Can be resisted
• Leads God's people
• Gives power to witness
• Speaks to the churches

A Final Reflection

The Holy Spirit is not presented in Scripture as something we should merely discuss intellectually.

The Bible calls us to walk in the Spirit.

“If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit.”
— Galatians 5:25

The question is therefore not only:

“Do I know about the Holy Spirit?”

But also:

“Am I allowing the Holy Spirit to transform the way I live?”

Does my life demonstrate love?

Do I pursue peace?

Do I forgive?

Do I practice self-control?

Do I seek truth?

Do I glorify Jesus?

Do I listen to God's Word?

Do I allow God's Spirit to lead me?

Because the evidence of the Spirit's work is not merely what we say—it is also the fruit produced in our lives.

“By their fruits ye shall know them.”
— Matthew 7:20

May we seek God sincerely, remain rooted in His Word, and allow the Holy Spirit to lead us closer to Jesus Christ.

My Midyear Reflection: What God Has Taught Me So Far

Half the year has already passed.

Sometimes that thought feels exciting. Other times, it reminds me of the goals I haven't reached, the prayers that are still waiting for answers, and the seasons that have stretched me in ways I never expected.

But when I paused to reflect instead of rushing into the second half of the year, I realized something beautiful:

God has been working all along.

Not only in the victories—but especially in the quiet moments, the waiting, the healing, and the ordinary days.

God Doesn't Waste Our Broken Seasons

If you've followed my journey, you know life hasn't always been easy.

I've experienced emotional battles, moments of questioning, difficult relationships, and seasons where I wondered if I would ever truly feel whole again.

There were days when I felt overwhelmed by my emotions and uncertain about my future.

Yet looking back, I can honestly say that God never left me.

Even when I couldn't feel His presence, He was gently carrying me.

Sometimes His greatest work wasn't changing my circumstances—it was changing my heart.

Healing Is Not a Straight Line

One lesson God continues to teach me is that healing rarely happens overnight.

There are good days.

There are difficult days.

There are moments when I feel strong, and moments when old wounds try to resurface.

But healing with Christ isn't about becoming perfect.

Every prayer, every Bible verse, every act of surrender becomes another stitch in the beautiful work He is creating within us.

God Can Use Our Creativity for His Glory

Creativity is a gift from God.

It isn't "just a hobby."

It can become ministry.

It can encourage someone.

It can provide for a family.

It can remind people that beauty still exists in a broken world.

Motherhood Is Refining Me

Being a mom has taught me patience I didn't know I needed.

It has shown me how deeply God loves His children.

One of the hardest lessons this year has been learning to wait.

Waiting for doors to open.

Waiting for dreams to unfold.

Waiting for financial breakthroughs.

Waiting for clarity.

Waiting for peace.

Our culture celebrates instant results.

God often develops patient hearts.

I've learned that waiting is not wasted time.

It's preparation.

Sometimes God delays the blessing because He's still preparing us to receive it.

Peace Is Worth Protecting

As I've grown older, I've realized I don't need to attend every argument, prove every point, or carry burdens that God never asked me to carry.

Peace has become one of the greatest treasures in my life.

I've become more intentional about protecting my heart, choosing healthy boundaries, and surrounding myself with things that bring me closer to Christ.

Not everything deserves my energy.

Not every opinion deserves my response.

Sometimes the holiest thing we can do is simply walk away and trust God.

God Provides in Unexpected Ways

Looking back over these months, I can see God's fingerprints everywhere.

Through unexpected opportunities.

Through kind people.

Through answered prayers.

Through closed doors that eventually protected me.

Through quiet mornings with coffee, prayer, and His Word.

His provision isn't always flashy.

Sometimes it's simply having enough strength for today.

And that is more than enough.

Looking Ahead

As the second half of the year begins, I don't want to chase success more than I chase Jesus.

I still have dreams.

I still have goals.

I still want to grow my businesses, continue creating content, support my family, and inspire women to live intentionally.

But above all, I want to remain faithful.

If this year has taught me anything, it's this:

God isn't asking me to have everything figured out.

He's simply asking me to trust Him with the next step.

And that's exactly what I plan to do.

A Prayer for the Rest of the Year

Lord,

Thank You for carrying me through every season this year.

Thank You for Your grace when I failed, Your comfort when I cried, and Your faithfulness when I couldn't see what You were doing.

Help me continue walking closely with You.

Teach me to trust You more than my fears.

Give me wisdom as a mother, strength as a woman, creativity in my work, and peace in my heart.

May everything I create point others back to You.

No matter what the rest of this year holds, remind me that You are already there.
